{"id":5535,"date":"2016-10-24T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-10-24T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fathommfg.com\/blog\/airbus-3d-printed-parts-a350"},"modified":"2016-10-24T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-10-24T00:00:00","slug":"airbus-3d-printed-parts-a350","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fathommfg.com\/blog\/airbus-3d-printed-parts-a350\/","title":{"rendered":"Airbus 3D Printed Parts A350"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3D Printing Integrated Into Aircraft Production \u2013 Fathom<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>3D Printing Integrated Into Aircraft Production\u2014<\/b>DDM Strategy Paying Dividends for Airbus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\">\n\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"340\" class=\"wp-image-5533\" src=\"https:\/\/fathommfg.com\/app\/uploads\/2016\/10\/airbus-blog-2.jpg\" alt=\"Airbus Blog\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fathommfg.com\/app\/uploads\/2016\/10\/airbus-blog-2.jpg 940w, https:\/\/fathommfg.com\/app\/uploads\/2016\/10\/airbus-blog-2-300x109.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fathommfg.com\/app\/uploads\/2016\/10\/airbus-blog-2-768x278.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In a joint release earlier this month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stratasys.com\/explore\/blogs2016\/10\/20\/airbus-additive-manufacturing-ultem-9085\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stratasys and leading aircraft manufacturer Airbus<\/a> announced that their partnership would include the standardization of ULTEM\u2122 9085 3D printing material for the production of flight parts for the Airbus A350 XWB aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ULTEM\u2122 9085 is used in a variety of <a href=\"http:\/\/go.studiofathom.com\/FDM_3DPrinter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stratasys\u2019 FDM 3D printers<\/a>, well-known for its mechanical properties, including strength-to-weight ratio and FST (flame, smoke and toxicity) compliance that make it especially well-suited to aerospace applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the announcement, \u201cULTEM 9085 enables the production of strong, lighter weight parts while substantially lowering manufacturing costs and production time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn 2014, Airbus produced a significant amount of parts on its Stratasys FDM-based 3D Printers for use in new A350 XWB aircraft, enabling Airbus to meet delivery commitments on-time,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/de.linkedin.com\/in\/andy-middleton-b9100288\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andy Middleton<\/a>, President, Stratasys EMEA. \u201cWe are pleased to support Airbus as they industrialize the inclusion of Stratasys 3D printed parts in the A350 XWB production supply chain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDirect Digital Manufacturing eliminates the need to invest in a conventional tool that is the standard of traditional manufacturing,\u201d Fathom Co-Founder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/rich-stump-6780623\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rich Stump<\/a> wrote in a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/fathommfg.com\/blog\/direct-digital-manufacturing-qa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blog post<\/a>. \u201cThe DDM process is becoming more widely adopted because of its ability to produce manufactured parts more quickly and cost effectively.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\">\n\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"340\" class=\"wp-image-5534\" src=\"https:\/\/fathommfg.com\/app\/uploads\/2016\/10\/airbus-blog-3.jpg\" alt=\"Airbus Blog\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fathommfg.com\/app\/uploads\/2016\/10\/airbus-blog-3.jpg 940w, https:\/\/fathommfg.com\/app\/uploads\/2016\/10\/airbus-blog-3-300x109.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fathommfg.com\/app\/uploads\/2016\/10\/airbus-blog-3-768x278.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With its need for high-performance, lightweight parts, the aerospace industry has been an early adopter of additive manufacturing at each step of the design cycle, from prototyping to end-use production.
